Black vultures can be found in open areas that have forested landscapes. They use the forest to roost and nest but search for food in open areas. In recent decades, the range of this species has gradually expanded northward. Vultures consume carcasses and have very strong stomach acid. They are important for limiting the spread of disease to other animals and humans.
